Memorandum of understanding between BO Milch and bio.inspecta on close cooperation in climate change mitigation
Climate action is an increasingly important issue for the agri-food industry. Acknowledging the severe impact of climate change on the farming sector as well as the sector’s potential to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Carbon Standards International (CSI) has developed the World-Climate Farm Tool (WCFT). In addition, the dairy sector organisation BO Milch has developed the BO Milch climate calculator KR BOM. Both are designed as carbon footprinting tools. These tools enable farms to implement measures and objectively measure and report on their greenhouse gas reduction achievements.
The organisations intend to work closely together in the area of climate change mitigation. This collaboration builds on the fact that their two tools for measuring climate footprints complement each other perfectly, and that combining them to create a joint climate calculator on the shared Barto platform will benefit everyone involved. The WCFT is managed by Carbon Standards International, which, same as bio.inspecta, is part of the EASY-CERT group of companies. The collaboration between the two organisations is based on the following considerations:
- The WCFT climate calculator takes a whole-farm approach and is designed for use around the world. It calculates the climate footprint of all of a farm’s enterprises and provides comprehensive results. However, dairying is less detailed here, and feed-food competition is not taken into consideration.
- The BO Milch climate calculator draws on years of expertise in the dairy sector to deliver the best possible results. It also considers the issue of feed-food competition, thus giving fair treatment to low-input, grass-based dairy enterprises. However, as it only produces results for milk production and, with minimal additional effort, for beef, it is not suitable for a whole-farm approach to farm climate footprinting.
This gives farming families a simple tool covering all of their farm enterprises and means that they do not have to fill out multiple balance sheets for different buyers. Moreover, the whole-farm approach increases credibility, which also meets buyer expectations. For these reasons, bio.inspecta and BO Milch have decided to collaborate closely. The following goals are to be achieved in the coming months:
- First step: To compare the two calculators in the dairy sector by entering real data and comparing the results.
- Second step: To compare the two calculators' methodologies, particularly with regard to allocation to different products and carbon sequestration.
- Third step: To integrate the KR BOM results into the WCFT results for farms that aim to generate a whole-farm result.
- Fourth step: To run calculations of dairy-relevant data in the background of the WCFT framework via KR BOM and to make the results visible within the WCFT.
- Final objective: Integration of KR BOM into WCFT.
The two organisations intend to complete these steps by the end of 2026. As part of this implementation, additional features for specialist crops, such as fruit and vegetable production and other agricultural products, will also be integrated into WCFT.
The carbon footprints will be verified by independent bodies (such as bio.inspecta), to ensure that the results can be used reliably throughout the value chain. They will therefore meet national and international climate assessment standards, including the recognised ISO standards and the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI) standard.
The Barto platform has already been chosen for the two calculators. Consequently, Barto AG is a partner in the intended cooperation and will be involved in all steps.
